Part 1 · The sport

Olympic sailing is a race where the only engine is the wind. The 49er is its most spectacular boat: a five metre skiff, two sailors hanging off trapeze wires, and a gennaker that powers it past 40 km/h. It takes years to sail one well and one bad manoeuvre to swim. For the next 0 days we’re sailing it as fast as we can, all the way to Los Angeles.

Part 1 · The boat

4.99 metres of controlled chaos.

Introduced as an Olympic class at the Sydney 2000 Games. Both crew hang off trapeze wires and use their bodyweight to balance the boat. It carries three sails: a square-top mainsail, a self-tacking jib, and a gennaker that is hoisted for the downwind legs and dropped for the upwind ones.

How a race works.

Hover a mark on the course

Every race starts with a five-minute countdown. From the gun, it’s a battle to finish the course fastest, just like F1, except there are only two laps. Crews plan their route around whatever Mother Nature throws at them: wind shifts, waves and current are just a few examples.
